You're probably wondering what happened on this, my anchor blog. I was using it to promote a client's book (GIBBO) and abandoned it for my own posting temporarily. I have now opened a new blog for him, and I am back to my OLD FAMILIAR PLACE. I will be posting here as well as my other two blogs, AS THY DAYS and PASSIONS AND SPLENDOR.

My inspiration came the day I visited Isaac's house in Slate Springs, Mississippi in 2007. It was dead of winter and, at the time, I was writing The Mississippi Boys , the manuscript almost finished. I gave my new book its title that day— Isaac's House . It had been hard for me to say goodbye to The Mississippi Boys , and it was settled, I didn't have to. I would write Isaac's House , and behind it, Joab . These are my people. Not the Paynes, for they are my fictional family. But the Clarks—T.G., Jonathan, Albert Henry, Isaac, Joab and Samuel Clark. T.G., Jonathan, and Albert Henry all died in the Battle of Gettysburg. Isaac joined the Confederate Army when he came of age and fought until the war ended. I'm still learning about Joab, and Samuel was my great-grandfather, only two years old when his father and brothers went to war. I returned to Isaac's house in Slate Springs in July 2009. March 26, 1998. Mississippi . "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." Perfect verse for today. Daddy is in the presence of the Lord. We buried him today under blue skies. After all was said and done, we—the children, Mother, and our extended families—sang over Daddy's grave, as we picked flowers for ourselves, a constant reminder of the resurrection of the body. We would see him again. A thousand images of Daddy raced through my mind. He was a giant of a man. A prince, loving, carring. A hard worker, but never a slave to anything or anyone but the Lord and his family. He had no enemies. His presence filled a room. His laughter was contagious. His compassion, unsurpassed. "Sense of Place" I was elated when I learned I would be getting an endorsement for JOAB.  JACK LAMAR MAYFIELD, OXFORD, MS  I met Jack Lamar Mayfield last year in Oxford, Mississippi. My friend from high school days, Emmie Lou Mooney Greene, a prominent Oxonian herself, introduced me to him and we spent several hours getting a grand tour from an historical perspective. I fell in love with the beautiful university town situated in the rolling hill country of northeast Mississippi. Of course, I had been to Oxford many times, but never having known such things as Jack Mayfield shared that day. Jackie, as known by his friends, is a fifth generation Oxonian. His family came to Oxford shortly after the Chickasaw Cession of 1832. He is a former history instructor and writes a weekly column for the local newspaper The Oxford Eagle .
